Changes to Benefit Premiums

Updated: Feb 7

Notice to Members

Health Spending Account

Our local has recently been made aware from the hospital that there will be a separate cost share associated with the Health Spending Account amounting to approximately $28/year.  OCHU has recently taken on this case on behalf of other locals and will be taking it to arbitration.  The implementation to date at other hospitals have not been as “blunt” as the implementation at Halton. In fact, what we have seen is it guised under the health and dental benefits.

This is new language under contract with CUPE locals so navigating it is going to take some time. Until OCHU has a decision on the challenge we really will not know based of the language awarded. In effect the OCHU file will set the precedence here.

Retroactive Premiums on Benefits

The hospital has also made the union aware that they will be charging members with retroactive benefit premiums from their retro pay.  The retroactive premiums would amount to approximately $15 per benefit paying full-time member.

The union opposes this decision.  It has been past practice to increase premiums on a go forward basis.  A grievance has been filed in opposition to this new practice.

About CUPE 815

CUPE 815 represents more than 1500 healthcare support workers from Halton Healthcare Milton and Oakville sites.

These workers include RPNs, Unit Clerks, Trades People, Food Services, MDR, Stores, and Housekeeping.

CUPE advocates for workers who deliver the public services people depend on. Our members work in hospitals, schools, municipalities, and many other public spaces.

We help our members provide the highest level of service by ensuring they are safe and healthy at work, and that they get fair pay and benefits for the services they provide.

We also advocate for better public services, like improvements to public health care and to the Canada Pension Plan, that would improve our communities and the lives all Canadians.

CUPE Local 815 acknowledges it is located on the traditional, unceded territory of the Haudenosaunee, Anishinabewaki, and Attiwonderonk peoples.
